Mercedes 500SEL 1988 offered for sale in very good and sound condition and a full years MoT. The vendor states car drives very well. The paintwork looks good and the interior looks to be in good condition as well. The car has had a recent service (which was done in house by the vendor) but the rest of the history has been lost, there are however a few old MOTs with the car.
Since ownership, the vendor has fitted a stainless steel exhaust, refurbished wheels and new tyres all round, new plugs and leads etc. Work that has been carried out:
- Removed and replaced fuel pump relay with aftermarket one (genuine no longer available).
- Removed complete fuel pump and filter assembly to replace fuel pipes on fuel filter tank and to replace filter.
- Found support bracket for fuel pumps corroded through and broken, also found both fuel pumps weeping and electrical unions spinning inside, requires two new fuel pumps and new bracket or repair old bracket.
- Repaired fuel filter brackets and fitted two new Bosch fuel pumps, fitted new fuel filter, new seals and new fuel pipe between fuel pumps and filters, fitted new mounts to fuel filter bracket.
- Drained fuel tank and fitted new fuel strainer and fuel hose in bottom of fuel tank, fitted new clips for fuel return hose. Note: fuel tank has rust and corrosion inside, requires fuel tank removing and cleaning out.
- Fitted new engine and gearbox mounts due to collapsed. Note: engine sits a lot higher now but where car has been fitted with an aftermarket stainless exhaust system on the old engine mounts the exhaust is now very close to floor pan and requires modification to drop it down for more clearance.
- Tried to set up emissions and engine and found it running extra lean, corrected mixture but found when mixture was correct that the idle was very high, this is most likely why someone has set mixture so low.
- Removed idle control valve and cleaned out, refitted and now idles better but ideally requires new idle control valve.
- Road tested and found underload the engine would not rev up correctly and perform as it should.
- Checked air flow sensor and found it reading erratically, requires new air flow sensor note: no longer available from Mercedes Benz, someone has fitted second hand metering unit/air flow sensor/baffle plate to car.
- There are companies that make aftermarket air flow sensors and would advise starting with that first and then reset engine emissions.
- Unable to check timing chain that customer has requested without removing rocker cover but suspect, with mileage and age, that it requires new timing chain.
