Reliant Scimitar SE4 GT 1966     GNR506D

Back in the 1960’s the Scimitar SE4 was a rare and expensive car and today there are but a few still running and on the road. The SE4 was really a rebodied Sabre 6, a rally proven car, but now with triple SU’s, a well-appointed interior and a very pretty GT body designed by Ogle. Making use of the well developed chassis and suspension together with a 4 speed box with overdrive available on 3rd and 4th these very underrated cars could easily out-perform their more common rivals.

GNR 506D is car number 109 of the 297 made and is documented on the Coupe Register of the RSSOC. The car has an interesting history going back to the original suppliers Roger Clark Cars of Leicester together with details of owners going back well before 1980. Then it was owned by a VSCC circuit racer with its stable mates including a Lagonda and Delage D8. The car has been featured in the club magazine where its competition history is also alluded to as an ex-hill climb car. Although still very original it does seem to have been tweaked towards motor sport at some time both from its performance level and the addition of heaters for both water and oil. These have not been tried out although the external period leads are still with the car.

GNR 506D has recently been lightly restored and is now presenting very well without losing any of its undoubted charm. The paintwork, which was not good, has been refreshed in a period ermine white and the competition wires have been rebuilt and powder coated and shod with V rated Kleber tyres. All mechanical items have been serviced which included a complete overdrive rebuild. The interior remains very original and in fine order as is the original Webasto roof and all the instruments work including the clock. There are details of the recent expenditure which totals over £11k.

This car has to be driven to really be appreciated. GNR 506D is agile and nimble on twisting roads with performance to match. With the sunshine roof open the noise from the custom made exhaust is simply magnificent.

With the car comes a copy of the rare owners handbook, workshop manual, period press reviews and sales literature. There is also an original jack and toolkit.
